History

History In Barcelos ethnic traditions are a rich
heritage of the customs that, throughout time, have modelled the experiences
of the people of this region. Folklore is a means of cultural statement and
authenticity and passes to those who visit Barcelos or have the opportunity
to watch the group perform the most authentic expressions of the cultures
and identities there represented. These are living agents of their culture
and, therefore, ambassadors of their regions whenever they spread their
music, dancing and singing. At a time when globalization emerges, it is
important to find means to preserve and divulge the cultural character of
the people. The Festival International Folclore Rio is one of those means. The
Festival International Folclore Rio was founded in 1980. Although initially
it did not identify itself with the present CIOFF festivals, the search of
cultural exchange led Grupo Folclórico de Barcelinhos to organize a folklore
festival with the participation of groups from Spain. Later, in 1989, it
extended to other countries, receiving a diploma of official CIOFF festival
in 2002. During its existence, the festival has welcomed representatives of
the five continents. On the stage built on the bank of Cávado River, about
75 foreign and national groups have represented over 40 countries. It takes
place annually during the last week of July. Throughout the 10 days of the
festival, the participants have the opportunity to share with the vast
audience various moments of dancing, singing, gastronomy and crafts.
